The University of Southern California has fired head coach Lane Kiffin, the school announced Sunday morning.

Kiffin's dismissal comes on the heels of the Trojans' 62-41 loss at Arizona State on Saturday -- a game in which USC gave up 28 unanswered points in the third quarter. According to the school's statement, USC athletic director Pat Haden informed Kiffin of his dismissal upon the team's return to Los Angeles on Sunday morning.

Kiffin joined a USC Trojans football program that was in a state of flux in 2010, having been stripped of scholarships and postseason eligibility following the departure of former coach Pete Carroll. After going 8-5 in 2010 and 10-2 in 2011, USC struggled mightily in Kiffin's third year. Ranked the preseason No. 1 team in the nation, the Trojans went 7-6 overall in 2012 and finished the season unranked.

The Arizona State loss is USC's second of the season, with the first coming against Washington State at the start of September. In all, USC lost seven of their last 11 games under Kiffin, who leaves the program with a 28-15 overall record.
