Major League Baseball has named Rob Manfred as its new Chief Operating Officer, according to Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times.

Manfred has previously worked as executive vice president for labor relations and human resources for MLB, and is the first person to hold the COO title since Bob DuPuy in 2010.

The move comes after last week's official announcement that Bud Selig would step down as commissioner following the 2014 season. Manfred is now seen as the top candidate to replace Selig as the head of MLB.
