Texas athletic director DeLoss Dodds announced Tuesday that he will retire from his position next August. The Austin American-Statesman reported the impending announcement on Monday.

Dodds, 76, has spent the last 32 years as the Texas AD.  Just two weeks ago, he denied a report from OrangeBloods.com that he was leaving the post, saying there was not "any immediate plans" to step down as athletic director.

Dodds said he will stay on through late August and then take on a consulting role in the department.

The football team has struggled over the past few seasons and this past season, the basketball team missed the NCAA Tournament for the first time in 15 years.

More from the American-Statesman:

The source said Texas President Bill Powers will lead the search for a successor and would very much like to have the position filled before Dec. 1. The source added that West Virginia athletic director Oliver Luck, a graduate of the Texas Law School, would be an important candidate "to keep an eye on."
