Minnesota Timberwolves forward Chase Budinger underwent knee surgery on Monday to remove his meniscus, and on Tuesday the team announced via Twitter that he will be out indefinitely.

The surgery was performed at Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine in Pensacola, Fla., less than a week after the 25-year-old sustained a cartilage injury to his left knee. Budinger had knee surgery last season that caused him to miss almost all all but 23 games, so it's conceivable that another setback could cost him a majority of this upcoming year as well.

As Kurt Helin of NBC Sports points out, the injury last week wasn't so much a result of a particular movement as it was a reaction to Budinger's increasing work load as he prepared for training camp. The extra activity caused the knee to swell, and, based on an MRI, the Minnesota medical staff determined that Budinger would need to undergo surgery to deal with the swelling and cartilage damage.

This offseason, Budinger re-signed with the Timberolves on a three-year, $15-million deal. If he's healthy, he'll return to a core that includes Kevin Love, Ricky Rubio, Nikola Pekovic, who also re-signed this season, J.J. Barea, Derrick Williams and rookie Shabazz Muhammad.

Budinger, despite his limited playing time last season, averaged 9.4 points and 3.1 rebounds in 22 minutes per game. The Wolves finished 31-51, their eighth consecutive losing season. The Wolves opened training camp on Tuesday.
