Amar'e Stoudemire and J.R. Smith will not join the Knicks for the team's first three preseason games, reports Pro Basketball Talk.
Both Smith and Stoudemire had knee surgery during the offseason, and coach Mike Woodson has decided to let them sit out the first half of New York's six-game preseason road trip.
Stoudemire is expected to be on a tight minutes limit when he does return to the court, while Smith is hoping to be cleared to play by a league doctor so that he can serve the five-game suspension he incurred for his third violation of the league's drug policy.
Jeremy Tyler, whom the Knicks signed over the summer, will also miss the team's first three games as he recovers from foot surgery.
New York will play their its three games in Rhode Island, Toronto, and New Hampshire.
