The NHL suspended Vancouver Canucks defenseman Alexander Edler for three games without pay for an illegal check to the head of San Jose Sharks forward Tomas Hertl during Thursday night's game, the league announced.

Edler will lose $182,926.83 in salary. He is considered a repeat offender under the terms of the league's Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Edler collided with Hertl near the Vancouver bench in the second period of the Canucks 4-1 loss to the Sharks, causing Hertl's helmet to fly off.

No penalty was assessed on the play.
