Brooklyn Nets point guard Deron Williams could miss the start of the regular season with a sprained ankle, head coach Jason Kidd told ESPNNewYork.com on Saturday.

Williams sat out Saturday's preseason game against the Detroit Pistons after telling ESPN New York on Thursday that he would miss at least the Nets next three preseason games.

He suffered the injury during a mid-September workout in Utah and missed Brooklyn's preseason opener on Tuesday.

The 29-year-old -- who averaged 18.9 points and 7.7 assists last season -- has said that he feels confident he will play in the team's regular-season opener against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Oct. 30, but Kidd expressed doubt about that possibility.

From ESPNNewYork.com's Mike Mazzeo:

"This is going to be a question that we're probably going to have to deal with every day until he does get the green light to go," Kidd said.

"But we're not rushing him. So if we have to start the season with him still trying to get better, I think we all feel comfortable, but we would feel a little bit more comfortable if he was starting."
