Nebraska guard Ray Gallegos suspended two games for 'behavioral issues'

Nebraska team captain Ray Gallegos has been suspended for two games by head coach Tim Miles because of a violation of team rules, reports Brian Rosenthal of the Lincoln Journal Star.

Although the coach wouldn't go into specifics, he called the situation "unfortunate, because we've got very good guards out because of conduct, behavioral issues." The length of the suspension was determined by Miles, who said he learned of Gallegos' violation before Monday's exhibition game against Nebraska-Kearney.

Gallegos, a senior guard at Nebraska, sat out that game, but Miles said it was because of a tight hip. Because of the suspension, Gallegos, who was the Huskers' leading scorer last season, with 12.3 points per game, will miss Friday's opener against Florida Gulf Coast and Tuesday's game against Western Illinois.

He joins guard Deverell Biggs on the sidelines. Biggs is currently serving a three-game suspension, which began with Monday's exhibition game, for a DUI citation last September. Miles said the loss of players from his backcourt is "too bad," but that he believes the team has what it takes to win without them:

"That's too bad, but you know what? I believe in our team and the rest of the guys we've got, that we can figure it out and find a way to win...I believe in Ray. I believe in him," Miles said. "I do think that he can get past this and be a productive, good player for us and still have a leadership role.

"It's disappointing, but at the same time, I'm not so sure Ray's not going to come back better from this. Give him a couple of weeks to collect his thoughts, and he's going to have to fulfill a couple of obligations to return to our program, and I think those can be beneficial for him."

Gallegos led the Big Ten Conference in three-pointers and minutes played last season. He was voted a team captain, and Miles said that Gallegos will keep the title despite the suspension.
