The National Hockey League is looking at possibly amending the current overtime format and plans are for the issue to be taken up during the general managers meeting in March, according to a report from NHL.com's Corey Masisak.

The current overtime format has 4-on-4 throughout the period, but there have been discussions for switching it to 3-on-3 for a portion of the overtime.

The teams now play a five-minute period with the team scoring first being declared the winner. The length of overtime could be extended too, thus avoiding there being so many shootouts.

MUIR: Quick takes from the NHL General Managers meeting in Toronto

"We talked in there and we're going to talk again in March," Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland said. "There seems to be some interest in maybe expanding overtime another couple of minutes. Whether it remains 4-on-4 or goes from 4-on-4 to 3-on-3, certainly seems to gaining some traction and we're going to have a long conversation about it in March."
