Ed Reed signs with Jets

The Jets have confirmed the signing of free agent safety Ed Reed, tweeting on Thursday morning that the nine-time Pro Bowler will be on the practice field for New York on Thursday. Terms of the deal are not immediately known.

ESPN's Chris Mortensen had reported on Thursday morning that the two sides were on the verge of an agreement, a day after the 35-year-old cleared waivers following his release by the Houston Texans. Reed will be eligible to play when the Jets play the Bills on Sunday.

Rich Cimini of ESPNNewYork.com has previously reported that the Jets' interest in Reed "appears to be more than cursory," with head coach Rex Ryan confirming as much in a statement on Wednesday night:

"I could say absolutely, yes, I'd like him on our team...The big picture of right now, the current football team, I'm probably not the right guy to make all those decisions. I think sometimes there's a comfort level in knowing guys, without question, guys that certainly played well for you. ... I'd like those guys, without question."

Ryan, who coached Reed on the Baltimore Ravens from 2002 to 2008, had said on Wednesday that he has already met with Jets general manager John Idzik about his interest in Reed but wouldn't go so far as to say New York will in fact pursue the Super Bowl champion. Two years ago, Ryan called Reed the greatest safety in the history of the game.

After 10 years with the Baltimore Ravens, Reed signed a three-year, $15 million deal with Houston, which included a $2 million signing bonus and $5 million guaranteed. The Jets play the Ravens in Baltimore on Nov. 24.
