Rutgers to review bullying incident involving former football player

Rutgers University athletic director Julie Hermann met with the parents of former football player Jevon Tyree to “clarify misunderstandings and resolve the issues” involving Tyree, who quit the team after accusing a coach of bullying, reports Ted Sherman of The Star-Ledger.

The university also said they will review the incident “and assess all relevant facts and any subsequent actions taken by the university’s athletics department.”

Tyree quit the team earlier this month after he said he was bullied by defensive coordinator Dave Cohen in the spring.

The school said Tyree's scholarship will be honored for the balance of the 2013-2014 academic year.

Tyree, his parents and a minister met with Hermann and the school categorized the meeting as only “the interests of the student-athlete were central to their discussion."

While Hermann said she later spoke with Tyree’s family, they say they never heard from the athletic director. The university did not say what sparked today’s meeting, or what specifically was said. Neither Soaries, nor Tyree’s family, could be immediately reached for comment.
