The Royals have signed left-handed pitcher Jason Vargas to a four-year contract, the team announced.

Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports reports the deal is worth $32 million.

Vargas, 40, was 9-8, with a 4.02 ERA, 109 strikeouts and 46 walks in 150 innings last season for the Angels. He was sidelined with a blood clot in his shoulder during the season.

With Ervin Santana testing the free agent market, Vargas could factor into a rotation that includes No. 1 starter James Shields and right-hander Jeremy Guthrie.

"I believe in what they are doing and how they continue to get better," Vargas said regarding his decision to sign with the Royals.
