The NBA is planning to fine Nets coach Jason Kidd $50,000 for forcing a timeout by scheming to spill a cup of soda on the court in his team's Wednesday night loss to Lakers, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.

With 8.3 seconds remaining and the Lakers leading 96-94, Jodie Meeks prepared to take the second of two free throws. Kidd, with a plastic cup of soda and ice in his right hand -- but no timeouts at his disposal -- began talking with second-year guard Tyshawn Taylor. Taylor soon bumped into Kidd’s arm, causing the soda to spill on the court. As a result, time was stopped and Kidd was able to draw up the Nets' last offensive possession.

TheBrooklynGame.com reviewed the tape and concluded that Kidd apparently said “Hit me” to Taylor before the soda-spilling collision.

According to Stefan Bondy of the New York Daily News, Kidd told reporters that he was trying to give his team an opportunity to win, but conceded it was not the right move:

"It’s about trying to win...I tried to put those guys in a position to get a good look, and we did."

"It's probably not something I should have done. ...We move on."
