Bears quarterback Jay Cutler will not return to play against the Cowboys on Monday night, according to coach Marc Trestman. Josh McCown will start at quarterback for the Bears.

Cutler has been out with a high ankle sprain suffered Nov. 10 against the Lions. He participated in the practice session open to the media on Thursday, but McCown took first reps with the first unit.

Trestman said Cutler looked good in his first practice in more than three weeks.

"I thought he threw the ball very well," said Trestman. "I was encouraged by the work he got in."

Trestman also said that Cutler will not be shut down this year and will "absolutely" play again in 2013.

McCown has played well for the Bears in Cutler's absence.

The Bears also announced that linebacker Lance Briggs would not play against the Cowboys.
