Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker out for Thursday's game after concussion

Not surprisingly, Broncos wide receiver Wes Welker won't play in Thursday's game against the Chargers, according to Fox Sports' Jay Glazer — and he could be out longer than that.

Welker has suffered two concussions in the last four games, including one against the Titans on Sunday, and head coach John Fox said on Tuesday the receiver's health "is what we're thinking about."

There was no chance Welker could be cleared for Thursday's game, because the league's concussion protocol says that, even if a player is symptom-free the day after a concussion, he can return only to light exercise on Tuesday and Wednesday (should the concussion happen on Sunday) and only to non-contact aspects of practice on Thursday.

Welker's first concussion this season came in a Week 11 win over the Chiefs but he played the next week in New England.

The 32-year-old has 73 catches for 778 yards and a career-high 10 touchdowns this season.

The Broncos (11-2) lead the Patriots by one game for the best record in the AFC.
