Mack Brown says decision to resign was entirely his own
University of Texas coach Mack Brown says that school AD Steve Patterson and president Bill Powers asked him to stay and that the decision to leave was his own, according to Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News.
Brown spoke at length on Sunday at what has been billed as a farewell press conference, commenting on topics from the 2001 death of defensive end Cole Pittman in a traffic accident and the Texas A&M bonfire tragedy, which Brown called the low points of his tenure, to the demands that will be faced by his successor.
The coach said that he will not be involved in selecting the team's next head coach, but indicated he will continue to be involved with the University of Texas. University president Bill Powers later took the podium and said that he would allow athletic director Steve Patterson total control over the coaching search.
