Angels sign Raul Ibanez to 1-year, $2.75M deal
The Los Angeles Angels signed 41-year-old left fielder and designated hitter Raul Ibanez to a one-year, $2.75 million deal on Wednesday that could be worth up to $5 million with incentives, according to Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
The deal leaves the team still in contention for Matt Garza or Masahiro Tanaka, at least from a financial perspective; the Angels have approximately $15 million left to spend before they hit the $189 million luxury tax threshold, and as Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register tweeted following the Ibanez deal, the team is "willing to go over by a little" if necessary.
A 2009 All-Star in his first season with the Philadelphia Phillies, Ibanez hit .242/.306/.487 with 29 home runs for the Seattle Mariners this past season. The $2.75 million deal he signed with the Angels on Wednesday is the same amount as his deal in December 2012 with the Mariners.
