North Carolina announced Friday that it will not seek reinstatement for junior guard P.J. Hairston.

In a press release, the school said that its joint review of Hairston's situation with the NCAA "made it clear that seeking reinstatement for P.J. would not be possible," according to athletic director Bubba Cunningham.

Hairston, who led the team in scoring last season with 14.6 points per game, has not yet played for the Tar Heels this season after it was discovered that he was driving a rental car acquired for him by a booster with a prior criminal history. North Carolina had also been without senior Leslie McDonald this season for receiving impermissible gifts, but McDonald was reinstated Wednesday and played in the team's loss to Texas that night.

It is believed Hairston will declare himself for the NBA draft instead of attempting to transfer.
