The Black Monday firings continue with the Washington Redskins firing head coach Mike Shanahan, according to the Washington Posts's NFL reporter Mark Maske.

The firing was widely expected given how poorly Washington played in 2013, a year after reaching the playoffs. Shanahan was heavily criticized for his handling of second-year quarterback Robert Griffin III.

Washington finished the season 3-13, the worst record of Shanahan's four-year tenure as head coach. Last seaon was notably better, when Washington went 10-6 and won the NFC North before losing to the Seattle Seahawks in the NFC wild-card game.  Shanahan had one year remaining on his five-year, $35 million contract.

He has a 24-40 record with Washington and a career head coaching record of 170-137.

Washington is believed to be looking at Lovie Smith, Jay Gruden and Stanford coach David Shaw as possible replacements for Shanahan.
