The Titans have fired head coach Mike Munchak, the team confirmed Saturday afternoon. ESPN's Chris Mortensen first reported the firing, citing league sources.

Munchak, 53, was 22-26 in three seasons as Tennessee's head coach with no playoff appearances, including a 7-9 mark this season. Quarterback Jake Locker was injured after a 3-1 start and the Titans lost eight of their next 10.

During Munchak's tenure, Tennessee was 2-20 against teams that finished the season with a winning record, according to ESPN Stats & Info.

Munchak, a Hall of Fame left guard, played 12 seasons for the Oilers and was a nine-time Pro Bowler after the team drafted him eighth in 1982. One year after retiring, the Oilers hired him as an offensive assistant, and in 1997, he became the team's offensive line coach — a role he served until 2010, when he was named head coach after the firing of Jeff Fisher.

The Penn State alum is believed to be a top candidate for the Nittany Lions' coaching job.

Team president/CEO Tommy Smith was reportedly planning to retain Munchak as late as Friday, according to The Tennessean, but Smith and the team apparently changed course.

Munchak is the seventh head coach to be fired this season, joining Rob Chudzinski (Browns), Leslie Frazier (Vikings), Gary Kubiak (Texans), Greg Schiano (Bucs), Jim Schwartz (Lions), and Mike Shanahan (Redskins).
