UTEP: Three basketball players dismissed from team for gambling

Three members of the University of Texas at El Paso's men's basketball team have been removed from the team for gambling, a university official said at a press conference Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, KFOX-14 had reported that the FBI was investigating two of the school's basketball players.

UTEP confirmed that junior guards McKenzie Moore and Jalen Ragland and recent transfer Justin Crosgile have been removed from the team and are suspended for at least one year by the NCAA for betting on sporting events, according to tweets about the press conference by CBS Sports' Matt Norlander.

Moore led the team in scoring at the time of the suspension, averaging 13.1 points per game through 11 games. Ragland averaged 3.7 points per game in nine games. UTEP is 10-5 this season and hasn't lost in the two games since the suspensions were announced.

The players are not believed to have bet on UTEP games and have not been implicated in any point shaving, according to the university.

The team learned of the gambling allegations in December and contacted the FBI, which began an investigation into the claims.
