Fran McCaffery suspended one game, fined for bumping Big Ten official

Iowa head coach Fran McCaffery was suspended one game and fined $10,000 by the Big Ten on Tuesday as a result of bumping an official and being ejected Sunday, the conference announced.

McCaffery will serve the suspension against Northwestern on Thursday.

According to the Big Ten, McCaffery violated Conference Agreement 10.01:

"The Big Ten Conference expects all contests involving a member institution to be conducted without compromise to any fundamental element of sportsmanship. Such fundamental elements include integrity of competition, civility toward all, and respect, particularly toward opponents and officials."

The coach apologized for the incident on Monday and Iowa's athletic director issued a statement supporting his coach while acknowledging McCaffery “crossed a line.”

With Iowa holding on to a 41-39 lead, McCaffery threw a midcourt tantrum following a foul call on Gabriel Olaseni. He was called for a technical foul and ejected immediately for bumping into an official.

“The first technical I think was expected, no question about that,” McCaffery said during the Big Ten coaches’ teleconference Monday. “I really wish I hadn’t gotten second one. You have to be able to assess things that happen. That’s what we ask players do – you’ve got to be able to that yourself. I didn’t put our team in a position that benefited them. I’ve got to be man enough to admit that and say I regret that.”
