Lance Berkman announces retirement
Longtime Astro Lance Berkman announced his retirement after a 15-year career on Wednesday, according to MLB.com's Richard Justice.
Berkman spent the first twelve years of his career in Houston before being traded for a half season to the Yankees. He then joined the St. Louis Cardinals, where he was a part of the 2011 World Series championship team, before finishing his career with the Texas Rangers last season.
Berkman has seen limited action due to injuries in recent years, and told MLB.com that he didn't feel comfortable continuing his career.
"It doesn't make sense to play in the physical condition I'm in," Berkman said, "I'm not going to keep trying to run out there for the heck of it."
The six-time All-Star added that he hopes to return to baseball as a coach at some point in the future.Berkman finished his career with 366 home runs and a .293 batting average.
