Marlins sign Carlos Marmol to 1-year deal

Carlos Marmol is a Miami Marlin, according to ESPN's Enrique Rojas.

In Chicago, the closer was known for his volatility. In his seven and a half years with the club, Marmol alternately dazzled and disappointed, facing several demotions from the closer role. Last July, after he posted a 5.86 ERA with Chicago and was once again taken out of his ninth-inning role, the Cubs traded Marmol to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Now the Marlins have taken a chance on the right-hander with excellent stuff, signing him to a one-year, $1.25 million deal, according to Enrique Rojas of ESPN.

Marmol has 117 career saves, but hasn't posted an ERA below 3.42 since 2010. His control has always been an issue, and last year he walked 7.3 batters per nine innings, second-highest in baseball among pitchers who threw at least 30 innings. However, his career strikeout rate -- 11.7 batters per nine innings -- continues to attract suitors.
