Johnny Manziel won't throw in Texas A&M's Pro Day on March 5 and will instead hold an on-campus event on March 27 for pro scouts, The Houston Chronicle's John McClain reported Monday.

Manziel's move suggests that he wants more time to hone his technique before being showcased in front of NFL scouts. Manziel has been working with private quarterbacks coach George Whitfield, who coached Andrew Luck and Cam Newton before the 2012 and 2011 NFL Drafts, respectively. Like Newton, Manziel is viewed as more of a mobile quarterback but has the potential to be selected first overall.

Former interim Houston Texans head coach and defensive coordinator said he recommended that the team draft Manziel with its No. 1 pick when he interviewed for the job that eventually went to Bill O'Brien.

"When I did the interview with the McNairs, I told them they ought to take Johnny Football," Phillips told 610 Radio. "That's what I told them, and I'm sitting here now without a job."
