Shaun White finishes fourth in halfpipe

Shaun White finished fourth in the men's snowboarding halfpipe competition, failing to become the first American to three-peat in an event at the Winter Olympics.

Swiss snowboarder Iouri Podladtchikov won the gold medal, scoring a 94.75 on his second run to claim top prize. White failed to medal in Tuesday's competition after winning gold at Turin 2006 and Vancouver 2010.

After falling twice on his first run, White rebounded on his second run, scoring a 90.25. But he remained behind Podladtchikov, who was followed by Japanese riders Ayumu Hirano and Taku Hiraoka.

White notched the top score in the qualifying round, posting a 95.75 in his first run to advance directly to the final.

The snowboarder pulled out of the slopestyle competition last week so that he could focus on the halfpipe. Though several other competitors criticized the move, White remained confident in his decision entering the halfpipe final.
