Michael Sam received plenty of support after he came out as gay on Sunday.

But his father, Michael Sam, Sr., said he was having trouble adjusting to the news. He received a text message from his son last Tuesday saying he was gay as Sam Sr. was celebrating his birthday at a Denny's near his home outside Dallas.

“I couldn’t eat no more, so I went to Applebee’s to have drinks,” Sam Sr. told The New York Times. “I don’t want my grandkids raised in that kind of environment.

“I’m old school. I’m a man-and-a-woman type of guy.”

Sam's father was still struggling with the news upon his son's announcement on Sunday.

“As a black man, we have so many hurdles to cross,” he said. “This is just one he has to cross.”

Sam Sr. said he loves his son and hopes he makes it to the NFL, but he said that he's uncomfortable with the idea of a gay NFL player.

Sam has reportedly always had a rocky relationship with his family and tends to stay with friends when he returns to his hometown, The Times reports.
