Longtime manager Dusty Baker wants another shot in MLB

Dusty Baker would like another managerial job in baseball, but he didn't get one this offseason.

The 64-year-old was fired by the Reds in October after they lost in the National League wild card game. He reportedly reached out to the Nationals, Mariners and Tigers this offseason regarding their openings but never got a call back.

"What's it take to call back and say, 'No, thank you?'" the three-time NL manager of the year told Daniel Brown of the San Jose Mercury News.

After his 19-year playing career ended in 1986, Baker was hired as a coach with the Giants in 1988 and took over as San Francisco's manager in 1993, a spot he held for 10 seasons. He then managed the Cubs for four years and, after taking the 2007 season off, spent six seasons managing the Reds.

Writes Brown: "Baker, 64, is at a career crossroads. The Cincinnati Reds fired him in October, despite a tenure that ended with back-to-back seasons of least 90 wins and a playoff appearance ... despite ranking 16th on baseball's all-time victories list ... despite joining the Giants' Bruce Bochy and Jim Leyland as the only three managers active at the end of last season to win at least 500 games for two teams.

"While some of his celebrated contemporaries — Tony La Russa, Bobby Cox and Joe Torre — will be enshrined in Cooperstown this summer, Baker will be home with his resume in hand. He wants to manage again."

Baker, who was never one for advanced stats, saw much younger men be hired this offseason, including 44-year-old Brad Ausmus in Detroit, 48-year-old Matt Williams in Washington and 51-year-old Bryan Price, who'll replace him in Cincinnati.

For now, Baker will have to bide his time until a job comes open.

Said Baker: "I feel like I could help somebody."
