Los Angeles Angels pitcher Mark Mulder's comeback attempt has been cut short by a ruptured Achilles tendon, according to Mike Digiovanni of the Los Angeles Times.

The injury occurred on Saturday while Mulder went through agility drills at Angels camp, and was confirmed later in the day by team officials.

The 36-year old Mulder, who had not pitched since 2008, signed a minor league contract with the Angels this offseason that could have been worth up to $6 million with incentives, in the hopes that he could return to the mound.

Mulder came in second in AL Cy Young award voting in 2001 when he was with the Oakland A's, and went on to pitch well for the St. Louis Cardinals before he was beset by injuries starting in 2006.
