The Cleveland Indians and pitcher Justin Masterson agreed to a one-year contract worth $9,762,500, avoiding arbitration, the team announced.

Masterson asked for $11.8 million during negotiations and the Indians had offered $8.05 million when the sides discussed arbitration salaries last month.

Masterson, 28, went 14-10 with a 3.45 ERA last season and 195 strikeouts and can earn additional award bonuses as part of the new deal. He will be eligible for free agency after the 2014 season.
