Report: Barry Bonds will be Giants spring training instructor

Barry Bonds has kept a low profile since 2007, his last MLB season.

But the reigning home run leader is scheduled to serve as a special instructor for the Giants in spring training in March, according to Alex Pavlovic's report in the San Jose Mercury News.

Bonds and the Giants have not been connected in an official capacity since his last season, Pavlovic reports.

The team has a few former players in camp this spring as instructors.

"He's part of what we'll do here," manager Bruce Bochy said about Bonds. "He's going to be part of the group of instructors, like [Will] Clark, [J.T.] Snow or [Jeff] Kent. He's going to be like the other guys and help where he can.

"I don't have any concerns."

Bonds is alleged to have used performance-enhacing drugs during his career. He served house arrest and was given two years probation after being found guilty of obstruction of justice stemming from a 2003 grand jury appearance.

The 49-year-old finished his career with an all-time best 762 home runs, including a single-season record 73 in 2001. He also had a .444 career on-base percentage, stole 514 bases and won eight Gold Gloves.

Writes Pavlovic: "In recent years [Bonds] has on several occasions quietly slipped into the home clubhouse at AT&T Park to dispense hitting advice."

Bonds was originally scheduled to arrive in Scottsdale, Ariz., the site of Giants spring training, on March 9 and leave March 17, but the team is still waiting on exact dates, Pavlovic reports.
