Hockey dominates Twitter mentions during Sochi Olympics

Hockey was most mentioned sport during the Sochi Olympics among the 40 million total tweets about #Sochi2014, according to data complied by Twitter.

Curling, figure skating, bobsled and snowboarding rounded out the top five sports mentioned.

The United States hockey team's victory over Russia, led by T.J. Oshie's four shootout goals, in the qualifying round topped the moments of competition that generated the biggest peaks on Twitter during the games, generating 72,630 tweets per minute (TPM). Four of the top five Sochi moments in terms of TPM were hockey-related, according to data from Twitter.

Canada's 1-0 victory over the U.S. in men's hockey generated 47,600 TPM, while the Canadian women's hockey team's gold medal victory over the U.S. had 42,000 TPM.

The most mentioned athletes were Oshie, figure skaters Mao Asado and Yuna Kim, and snowboarders Shaun White and Mark McMorris.
