Chase Headley MRI confirms calf strain, out 2-3 weeks for Padres

Padres third baseman Chase Headley is expected to undergo another two to three weeks of rehab after an MRI confirmed on Tuesday morning that he suffered a Grade 1 calf strain during a drill last Saturday, according to a tweet from San Diego beat writer Corey Brock.

It's unclear whether the injury will set him back enough to keep him out of Opening Day. If it does, it would be the second consecutive season in which the 29-year-old missed the season opener; last season, Headley, a 2012 Golden Glove winner, didn't make his regular season debut until April 17 because of a fractured thumb suffered during spring training.

Headley, who also underwent minor knee surgery this season, batted .250 last season with 13 home runs and recorded a .747 OPS over a 141-game span. In 2012, he had 31 home runs and 115 RBI, an NL-best for the year.

In January, Headley, who has spent his entire career with San Diego, agreed to a one year, $10.5 million extension with the Padres.
