David Wright: 90 wins for Mets 'a good starting point'

The Mets haven't had a 90-win season since they finished 97-65 in 2006. They haven't even had an 80-win season since 2008.

But general manager Sandy Alderson told Mets executives this year's team should win 90 games in a meeting earlier this week, according to a report in the New York Daily News.

Team captain David Wright was asked about Alderson's assertion on Thursday.

"We've got good players," Wright said to ESPNNewYork.com's Adam Rubin. "I love the fact that Sandy is confident in us. I think 90 is challenging, it's attainable, and it's a good starting point for us. You know, number goals, it's tough to come out and say, 'I'm going to do this. I'm going to do that. We're going to do that.' But I think 90 is a good starting point for giving us something to shoot for and getting guys to understand that mediocrity is not going to be acceptable.

"It's not about being better than last year. What does that get us? Third or fourth place? It's about being a good team and being a playoff-contending team. Ninety wins is a good starting point." Wright said the 90-win total was not communicated to the players by Alderson.

"That's the first I heard about it," Wright said about the Daily News report. "But I like the fact that, like I said, he seems confident. He's had a chance now to bring in some of his guys, make some of his moves. I think it's great."

The Mets finished 74-88 the last two seasons and their five straight losing seasons are tied with the Astros for the longest active streak in baseball.

They will most likely be without last year's staff ace Matt Harvey all season as he recovers from Tommy John surgery.

Wright, 30, hit .308 with 18 homers and 57 RBIs in 111 games last season. He was the only Mets regular with a batting average above .300.
