New Mexico State guard suspended after postgame brawl

New Mexico State guard K.C. Ross-Miller was suspended by head coach Marvin Menzies on Friday morning, only hours after Ross-Miller sparked a postgame brawl when he threw the ball at a Utah Valley player as time expired in New Mexico State's 66-61 overtime loss in Orem, Utah.

The ball hit Utah Valley's Holton Hunsaker in the leg from close range.

"No matter what provoked K.C., what he did was inexcusable and hence the suspension," Menzies said in a statement released by the school. "It is an honor and a privilege to wear an Aggie uniform, and a responsibility comes with that privilege.

"I will wait until I've had a chance to talk with our conference officials and university administration before any other disciplinary actions may or may not be taken."

Menzies did not discuss the potential length of the suspension.

Utah Valley fans stormed the court at the game's end, and at least one New Mexico State player threw a punch. WAC commissioner Jeff Hurd will also review the tape, according to an ESPN.com report.

"We are currently reviewing several sources of video to accurately assess the situation," Menzies said. "Obviously this was a very unfortunate incident and I'm hopeful that we can learn from it moving forward."

Utah Valley's win gave the Wolverines (17-10, 11-3) a one-game lead over New Mexico State (21-9, 10-4) in the WAC standings with two regular-season games to play. The teams could meet again in the WAC tournament with an NCAA tournament berth on the line.

The Aggies had won four in a row and seven of eight before Thursday's loss.
