The New York Jets released wide receiver Santonio Holmes, saving the team a reported $8.25 million in salary cap space, the team announced Monday.

He was due $1 million if he was on the roster on March 13 and he carried a $10.75 million cap number.

Holmes, 30, signed a five-year, $45.25 million contract with $24 million guaranteed in 2011, but in four seasons with the team Holmes only had 146 catches for 2,128 yards and 16 touchdowns. He caught 23 passes for 456 yards in an injury-plagued 2013 season.

"I appreciate Tone’s contributions over the last four seasons. I’ve always admired his knack for making the clutch play. He’s a tremendous competitor who wants the ball in his hands when the game is on the line.  I wish him nothing but the best," Jets coach Rex Ryan said.
