Braves pitcher Kris Medlen to have Tommy John surgery

For the second time in his short major league career, pitcher Kris Medlen will undergo Tommy John surgery.

The Braves announced Monday that the 28-year-old pitcher will have the surgery on Tuesday after he was examined by Dr. James Andrews, reports Mike Axisa of CBS Sports.

Medlen left his last start, March 9th against the Mets, after he felt pain in his throwing elbow with two outs in the fourth inning.  This is the second time Medlen has injured a ligament in his right elbow.  The last injury also came  against the Mets in August of 2010.

Braves pitching has taken a hit this spring training.  Right-hander Brandon Beachy felt pain in his biceps the day after Medlen went down.  Beachy is also facing a possible second Tommy John surgery. He will be in Los Angeles Tuesday to get a second opinion on his throwing elbow.

Medlen went 15-12 with a 3.11 ERA in 31 starts last season.
