An MRI on Los Angeles Dodgers outfielder Yasiel Puig's injured thumb revealed a ligament strain, Dodgers manager Don Mattingly said Sunday. X-ray results earlier in the day had shown no damage. Mattingly added the team will know a lot more in the coming days.

Mattingly said earlier Sunday that the thumb looked "pretty swollen," but that Puig may have been able to pinch hit in the team's game against the San Francisco Giants on Sunday night if needed.

The second-year player jammed his thumb in the third inning of the Dodgers' 7-2 loss to the Giants on Saturday, while sliding into first base to avoid a pick-off attempt.
