The Texas Rangers placed pitcher Tanner Scheppers on the 15-day disabled list with right elbow inflammation, the team announced Friday.
The Rangers called up left hander Aaron Poreda from Triple-A Round Rock to take Scheppers' roster spot.
Scheppers, the team's Opening Day starter, has struggled in his four starts this season, pitching only 18.1 innings, giving up 20 earned runs and four home runs.
In his last start against the Seattle Mariners on Thursday, Texas gave Scheppers to a 4-0 lead, but in the third inning he walked three batters, gave up two home runs and was charged with six earned runs.
He is 0-1 with a 9.83 ERA this season. The team says Scheppers will not throw for 10 days.
"It's nothing that's crossed my mind," Rangers manager Ron Washington said when asked if he was considering moving Scheppers out of the rotation. "We know it's a work in progress. "
