Report: A's pitcher A.J. Griffin will have Tommy John surgery
Oakland Athletics pitcher A.J. Griffin will have Tommy John surgery after failing to show progress during the last month of rehab, according to CSNBayArea.com's Joe Stiglitch.
The right-handed starter was shut down during spring training with pain in his throwing elbow, and manager Bob Melvin told reporters on Thursday that he was scheduled to visit a specialist the following week to get another opinion on the injury.
Griffin will be the second starter Oakland has lost to Tommy John surgery this season after Jarrod Parker went under the knife in late March.
