Pirates put catcher Russell Martin on disabled list with strained left hamstring

After suffering a strained left hamstring in Friday's 1-0 loss to the Cardinals in St. Louis, the Pirates put catcher Russell Martin on the 15-day disabled list, the team announced on Saturday.

The three-time All-Star, who is in his second season in Pittsburgh after five with the Dodgers and two with the Yankees, is hitting .242 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 16 games this season. Veteran Chris Stewart will take over as the team's starting catcher.

Martin missed two games before he was injured in the sixth inning on Friday. He initially complained about hip pain and was sent to Pittsburgh for an MRI.

The Pirates also put closer Jason Grilli on the disabled list with a left oblique strain. The move was originally scheduled for Friday but a "procedural error," according to Cash Kruth of MLB.com, prevented them doing so until Saturday.

Grilli has blown three saves in seven opportunities after converting 33-of-35 last season.
