Orioles' Chris Davis receives two injections to injured oblique

Orioles first baseman Chris Davis hit nine home runs last April en route to a league-high 53.

But he is well behind that pace this season, with only two homers, and just last weekend the 28-year-old had to go on the disabled list with a strained left oblique.

In an attempt to hasten his return to baseball activities, Davis got two platelet-rich-plasma injections in the injured area on Monday, Dan Connolly of The Baltimore Sun reported Tuesday night.

“They drew my blood and injected the platelets from my blood into my oblique because it is supposed to speed up the healing process,” said Davis, who had never dealt with an oblique injury before.

Davis is eligible to come off the disabled list on May 11 but there is no timetable for his return, Connolly reports, and manager Buck Showalter said Davis will likely miss more than the minimum 15 days.

“It’s the same as it was a few days ago. We have to wait,” said Davis, who will travel with the team for its upcoming road trip to Minnesota and Tampa Bay. “It was pretty sore today, so we’ll wait a couple days to see how I feel, and then continue getting treatment, and hopefully it won’t be too long.”

Davis has 132 career home runs in seven big league seasons, with 53 coming last year.

Baltimore (12-12) is two games behind the Yankees for first place in the AL East.
