Giants pitcher Matt Cain expected to start Monday at Pittsburgh after slicing finger

Giants pitcher Matt Cain is expected to rejoin the rotation on Monday and start on the mound for the team's game that night in Pittsburgh against the Pirates, according to a report from Rick Eymer of MLB.com.

The 29-year-old two-time World Series champion, just two years removed from pitching the Giants' first perfect game in franchise history, sliced his finger while making a sandwich in the clubhouse hours prior to the team's home game against the San Diego Padres this past Tuesday. Yusmeiro Petit filled in for him and led the team to a 6-0 shutout over San Diego.

Giants manager Bruce Bochy said that Petit, who has a 3.31 ERA in 73 total innings during his two years with the Giants, will fill in for Cain again on Monday should the finger not be completely healed. Bochy added that Cain, a three-time All-Star, will be reassessed by the team's medical staff when the players arrive in Atlanta for a game against the Braves on Friday.
