The San Francisco Giants have placed starter Matt Cain on the 15-day disabled list with a cut on his right finger, the team announced Sunday. The move came after a freak incident in which he sliced his finger with a knife while making a sandwich in the team's clubhouse.

The 29-year-old Cain, who is two years removed from pitching the Giants’ first perfect game in franchise history, is 0-3 with a 4.35 ERA in five starts and 31 innings this season. This is only the second time he has had to go on the disabled list — last year, he also went on the 15-day DL after a comeback line drive hit his forearm.

It's likely that 29-year-old reliever Yusmeiro Petit will take Cain's spot in the rotation. Petit has a 2.91 ERA with the Giants this season, and he led the team to a 6-0 victory over the San Diego Padres when Cain first suffered his injury.
