Green Bay Packers team president Mark Murphy has been formulating a contract extension for head coach Mike McCarthy, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel's Bob McGinn reported.

The 50-year-old McCarthy, who will enter his ninth season in Green Bay this fall, last had his contract extended in 2011. His current contract runs through the 2015 season.

McCarthy has compiled an 82-45-1 regular-season record in eight seasons with the Packers, and he has one Super Bowl ring to his name. But despite his success in Green Bay, McGinn reported the new developments were "met by some grumbling within the team's board of directors."

One of the issues that could complicate McCarthy's situation is the contract of general manager Ted Thompson, which runs through the 2016 draft. But it's unclear if the Packers are working to renew his contract, and Thompson could walk away at any time. As McGinn explained, the Packers' organization is set up so the general manager has control over the team's coach.

McCarthy said earlier this offseason that he thought his eight-year tenure as Packers' head coach was only "halftime."

“Working in Green Bay, there’s nothing like getting up every day and going to Lambeau Field,” McCarthy said, according to Pro Football Talk. “I love the people I work with. I love where I work, and more importantly I love what I do. I feel like I’m at halftime, frankly, hopefully.”
