The Dolphins fined and suspended strong safety Don Jones on Sunday night following tweets he posted earlier in the weekend about Michael Sam being drafted by an NFL team.

Sam, the first openly gay college football player, was selected in the seventh round by the St. Louis Rams on Saturday, effectively making him the first openly gay player drafted into the NFL. Following the news, Jones tweeted "OMG" and "Horrible" when Sam was seen on ESPN kissing his boyfriend in celebration of being drafted. The tweets were subsequently deleted and his account was made private.

Jones is suspended from all team activities "until such time that he undergoes and completes educational training for his recent comments made on social media during the NFL Draft," according to a statement the team issued Sunday night following the suspension.

Head coach Joe Philbin called Jones' remarks "inappropriate" and "unacceptable" and wishes they hadn't been made because they had a "negative impact" on the draft. Philbin said he met with Jones on Sunday to discuss "respect, discrimination and judgment."

Jones also issued a statement in which he apologized for the tweets, saying he takes  "full responsibility for them and I regret that these tweets took away from his draft moment," according to the Dolphins' statement.
