The Miami Marlins have placed pitcher Jose Fernandez on the 15-day disabled list.  The start of the 15-day period is retroactive to May 10, the day after  the 21-year-old right-hander was roughed up in his start against the San Diego Padres.

In that start on Friday, Fernandez gave up six runs, five earned, in five-plus innings.  Before the game Fernandez claimed he was feeling ill before his last start and told reporters on Saturday that his arm was fine.

Earlier in the day, the Miami Herald reported that the Marlins pitcher was  Los Angeles undergoing an MRI on his right elbow.

Fernandez, the National League's Rookie of the Year last season, was scheduled to make his next start on Wednesday against the Dodgers.  In eight starts this season, Fernandez has gone 4-2 with a 2.44 ERA.

According to Juan C. Rodriguez of the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, the Marlins anticipate that Fernandez could require season ending surgery.
