Carolina Panthers defensive end Greg Hardy faces misdemeanor charges of communicating threats and assault on a female after he was arrested on Tuesday in an incident involving his girlfriend, according to a report from WSOCTV.com.

According to the Charlotte Observer, officers responded to a call around 4:18 a.m. Tuesday morning. A woman, who said she and Hardy had been in a relationship since September, said she had been physically assaulted and threatened by Hardy, according to the statement.

“We are very disappointed to learn of the allegations involving Greg and are concerned for all parties as we continue to investigate,” the Panthers said in a statement.

In February, Hardy signed a franchise tender with Carolina. He is set to make $13.1 million next season if he doesn't ink a long-term deal before July 15.

Last season he had 59 total tackles, with 15 sacks and one forced fumble on his way to being named second-team All-Pro by the Associated Press.
