The Detroit Pistons are preparing an offer to former Orlando Magic head coach Stan Van Gundy that would give him head coach duties and complete control over the organization's basketball operations, according to a report Tuesday afternoon from Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports.

Standing in their way, however, are the Golden State Warriors, who are reportedly in hot pursuit of Van Gundy now that talks between Steve Kerr and the New York Knicks appear to be headed into their final stages.

It had been rumored that Kerr was deciding between the Warriors head coaching job or moving to the east coast to work under Phil Jackson as the replacement to Mike Woodson.

After three years in Golden State, head coach Mark Jackson parted ways with the team in May, leaving the door open for Kerr or Van Gundy, or an unnamed party should both of those options fall through for the Warriors.

According to Wojnarowski, Van Gundy remains highly interested in coaching the Warriors but it's uncertain what his interest is in taking over in Detroit both in a front office position and as head coach.

Tim Kawakami of The Mercury News tweeted on Tuesday that Van Gundy told Golden State he wants complete control of basketball operations, but the team reportedly declined, thus perhaps opening the door for him to have an increased level of interest in Detroit.

The 54-year-old has a career .641 winning percentage as a head coach, having been with the Miami Heat and Orlando Magic, the latter of which he led to the NBA Finals in 2009 with Dwight Howard.
