NFL to reportedly table playoff expansion talks for 2014 season

NFL team owners are holding their spring meetings in Atlanta this week and among the topics that will not be discussed is the possible expansion of the playoff field to 14 teams for the upcoming season.

According to tweets from Fox Sports' Mike Garafolo, the owners will table the discussion for now, but still hope that there is a playoff expansion plan in place for the 2015 season.  The owners' reasoning for the change is simple: extra revenue during wild-card weekend.

There has not been an expansion in the amount of teams that qualify for the playoffs since 1990, when the league expanded to 12 playoff teams. Three-fourths of the league's 32 owners have to sign off on the plan for expansion to be official.

The next earliest date the owners can discuss expansion is at their fall meeting, scheduled to be held on Oct. 7 and 8 in Detroit.
